Pest Detection and Exclusion
The Department administers a systematic detection program in urban areas, commercial crops and high hazard areas to find pest infestations before they become generally distributed. The Department also performs inspections to prevent the introduction of plant pests and plant diseases that may be detrimental to agricultural crops and certifies agricultural commodities to ensure compliance with export requirements of foreign countries and domestic destinations.
On August 10th, 5 Melon Fruit Flies (MFF) were detected in a single trap south of Meridian in Kern County (South Eastern Portion of the County). CDFA Entomologist Dr. Hoffman has confirmed them to be wild. Two male and three female MFF (Bactrocera cucurbitae, rated "A"). On August 11th, one more additional MFF was trapped in close proximity to the first trap. This has triggered eradication and quarantine protocols. All Kern County news and information relating to this Melon Fruit Fly find will be posted as it becomes available.
The Department began systematic trapping programs to detect the presence of Asian Citrus Psyllid and European Grapevine Moth in March 2010. Periodic updates will be posted on our website as will important links and maps as they become available.
